by: Franklin Banker

Although traditionally, land based casinos seemed like the only solution to satisfy your gambling needs, the insurgance of online casinos allows any potential gambler to take a walk on the wild side, and venture into the world of online casino’s where privacy, security and prompt payment to winners is their focus.

Competition - Running an online casino is less expensive (but not in any way easier) than a land casino. Lesser expenses means more online casinos and more online casinos means competition between the Internet casino houses. The competition means better service and more fun and that’s where you win. Choice means you can stick to what you like, find an online casino that offers the best as it suits you - the player - and if you didn’t like the experience, just dump them. Try another online casino. Online casinos will strive to provide you with variety of games and conditions - against machines and other online casino players. It doesn’t matter if you are a gambling beginner or a high rolling casino veteran as you are equally welcome whether you are a new player or a seasoned casino guru. The business premise of an online casino is just like everyone else’s: they lose if you go. The big difference is that you’ve got somewhere else to go and it doesn’t take a whole lot.Online casino sites come and go every time - the online casinos that give crappy experience or run by amateurs simply don’t survive. Only the good online casinos stay. Which brings us to the next point:

Safety and privacy - An online casino will not try to film you and whom you walked in with. You wouldn’t be kicked out of the online casino if you don’t observe the dress code (we don’t have a dress code!), if you win too much (like they always do in the movies!) or if they simply don’t like you. You can play games in an online casino while wearing boxers and flipflops. And you can do it with beer in your hand, a cigarette or whatever is it that you prefer to consume. The online casino doesn’t care. No one has to know that you do it, and no one does. It’s absolutely your business and not anyone else’s. The online casinos know better than abusing your trust: they just don’t get the opportunity to cheat you. Besides, all serious online casino businesses employ latest state of the art encryption technologies to protect the players’ privacy. When entering an online casino, study their privacy statement! The hard core security technologies that online casinos employ are designed to protect the player because it is the player that is the most valuable asset of online casinos

Environment - While the luxury of a “real” casino is infallible and can’t be completely reproduced by a piece of internet software however sophisticated, it serves you no good when it comes down to the thing central to the casinos - gambling. The casino athmosphere is trying to dissolve and distract you… from your money. Think about it! In a “real” casino you’d be competing not only against the groomed dealers and other players but also against the casino crowd. They’ll be watching you and you will feel their sights on your back, the pressure and the push into making your move already. Have you ever thought why a casino would never have a clock - anywhere? When you step into a casino, it grabs you and distracts you. Free drinks, beautiful people and seemingly welcoming comfort of a casino will relax you and draw you away. When you choose an online casino, you remain in control. An online casino can’t outdo you in the comfort of your own home and frankly, it doesn’t want to either. You can play throughout your work day or work throughout your play day. No online casino will ever tell you when to come and when to go. Like they say: your home is your castle.

Ease - You can get into an entire new life of online casinos in five minutes even if you are not really a people kind of person. Even if you are lazy ( most probably if you are lazy!). There’s no embarassment for newcomers, you don’t have to go anywhere or dress anything and it doesn’t really matter if you’ve played it all before or this would be the first game of your life. Click-click and you’re in. Online casinos have all the help, support, certification and technology to satisfy you. Everything online is under your fingertips, one Internet search away. As you can chat with other players and look up the reputation of a particular online casino if you want to or even submit a testimony, online casinos will do everything to please. The paradox of online gambling is that the industry that is traditionally associated with cheating and crime in minds of most people is in fact one of the cleanest, safest and most successful Internet businesses ever. Online casinos are there more for you than for themselves.

Fun - Online casinos are instant fun and an awesome experience whether you choose to just compete against the computer or have fun with other real players. And finally, MONEY! . Not the usual casino plastic chips - real money. In “real” casino you buy chips; in an online casino you would create a casino account and transfer funds into it. The fundamental difference however that in an online casino you know how much money you have at all times. The chips are only used for bets and the entire thing isn’t as puzzling as it would be in a land casino. By the way, online casinos always provide you with an opportunity to play without any money at all - for free or with “fake” money just so that you get the feel of the game and understand the rules, maybe work out a strategy or build a preferrence. Moreover, the competition forces the online casinos to try and attract the customer in every possible way - and that includes sometimes unbelievable offers and bonuses. Imagine walking into a casino and getting free chips?

It’s real. The games are as good and the chances are even better. Where land casinos are tightly controlled by the authorities, online casinos are kept in check even tighter by an even better authority: the players and the laws of market. You can actually go to an online casino and win real money without going anywhere - without risking unwanted exposure and your money.

When you’re driving 5, 10, 15 or 20 mph in your go cart it’s a fairly save way to have fun. But at speeds of 160 mph or more it can get a little hairy unless you take some safety precautions.

Go carts are certainly thrilling, but they can also be dangerous if not taken seriously. You have to remember that it’s not just you out on the track. There will be other drivers attempting to pass you around sharp corners whose talent may be questionable at best. By following a few common-sense safety rules you can eliminate most of the serious dangers.

Different types of go carts can have speeds ranging anywhere from very slow to very fast. But regardless of the speed they are always exciting to race. They are simple vehicles that are also easy to handle. No matter what your skill level there are tracks all over the country that will fill your needs and wants. There are many go cart classes or levels that will cater to every age range from kids to adults. Gocarts are generally easy to drive and easy to control. This is why they have become so popular, because it’s an easy and relatively cheap way to experience the thrill of Formula 1 racing without the expense or the danger.

There are many different types of vehicles that are built for racing fun. Among these are ATV off road vehicles, motor scooters, dirt bikes, mopeds, mini bikes, motorcycles and gopeds. But if you are wanting to experience the thrill and excitement of Indy Car or Formula 1 open-wheel racing, with a powerful gas engine rocketing you down the track, and with relative safety, go carts are what you will want to be climbing into.

For beginners to experts, and everyone in between, go carts are fun. Whether you want to drive as slow as your Grandma or as fast as Tony Stewart and Michael Schumacher, racing go carts can get you there. Many top professional NASCAR, Formula One and Indy Car drivers today got their start in the lowly go cart. With a lot of practice maybe you can achieve the same success.

It wasn’t too long ago that go carts were mostly found in family fun centers where any kid and his little brother could go racing at a whopping 15 or mph. They still exist, but real go cart tracks have been springing up all over. It’s now possible to go 60 miles an hour in a go cart. And if that’s not fast enough for you try an enduro cart and reach top speeds of 90 mph. Or race in a shifter cart at an astounding 160 mph. Don’t start sweating yet, you don’t have to go that fast to have fun. You can drive in any level or class that you feel comfortable with.

But this brings up some questions: With go carts speeding down the track so fast these days, are they too dangerous to drive? Can you travel as fast as 100 mph and still be safe? The answer is yes and no. Sure, you can still be safe, but without following certain safety rules you can increase your chances of serious injury. It’s not necessarily the fast speeds that cause the serious accidents, but the unsafe or inexperienced drivers.

The first rule of the road is to remain in your comfort zone. This is easier said then done however because racing is not for the timid. At some point, when you want to move up to a more experienced level or class, you may not feel equipped to do that. However, by building up your confidence in the lower classes you will eventually be ready for more competition. Just don’t try to move up faster than your driving expertise allows.

Back in the olden days, when go carts were extremely slow, you could go racing safely without a helmet. Those days are long gone. Even in kiddie tracks helmets are a requirement now. The helmet is perhaps the most important piece of equipment that a go cart driver will ever use. There are other pieces of equipment that are necessary too, but none more important than a high-quality helmet. In the event of a crash it can spare you from a serious head injury.

To a great extent you can control the amount of danger that you are faced with. Many decisions that you make before climbing into the cart will determine how safe it will be for you out on the track. From the type of clothes you wear to the type of go cart you buy will help determine your safety level on the track. By taking every safety precaution that you possibly can you will lessen your risk of sustaining a serious injury. So do your homework and be prepared. It’s a lot more fun racing go carts when you can walk away after a race instead of having to be driven away in an ambulance.

The importance of clothing can’t be overstated. The slower you race the less important clothing becomes, but the faster your go cart goes the more you need to be sure you are clothed properly. Depending on your speeds certain clothing may help spare you from serious injury. At faster speeds fire safety suits are a must. There is ignitable fuel in your vehicle and in the event of a crash it is possible for it to catch fire. Preventing burns is a very desirable thing. Other indispensable gear includes fire-resistant racing shoes to protect your feet and gloves for your hands.

All go carts today have roll bars that extend higher than the driver’s head. The chassis of the go cart will either be open or caged. A caged go cart has a cage that covers the driver. It protects the driver in the event of a rollover. It serves the same purpose as a roll bar. Most tracks demand a cage for safety. Go carts also have side bars that can protect you from serious injury should another driver ram you from the side. You have to remember, you could be the greatest driver in the world, but you’re not out there alone. You are driving with others whose skill levels may leave a lot to be desired. So buying a quality go cart is always a good idea.

By taking these few simple precautions it will improve your chances of having fun out on the track by lessening your chances of becoming injured. Go carts can be just about as safe as you make them. With some practice and experience there is no reason why any driver can’t move up the ranks safely. Keep safety as your number one goal and go carting will be fun for many years to come.

Having a golf trainer in your corner to give you guidance, motivation and ongoing, cutting-edge golf fitness information will put you leaps and bounds above your playing partners and competitors.

An experienced golf trainer will be able to diagnose your current level of fitness, physical limitations and prescribe the right program for you in which you will make the most of your time and money.

I hear so many horror stories of a ‘general’ fitness trainer calling himself a golf trainer only to end up making the client (golfers’ ) game even worse.

How discouraging would that be?

A qualified golf trainer will not only have the appropriate education and background, but have a deep understanding of the golf swing and mechanics. And be able to apply his/her exercise physiology knowledge to the benefit of the golfer.

Upon meeting a potential golf trainer you should ask some golf-specific questions to test the golf trainers’ knowledge of golf. You’ll know in less than one minute if they in fact do know something about the golf swing. If you have the least bit of hesitation, move on to the next golf trainer until you find one you feel will help you the most.

Now the bad news!

A golf trainer is a specialized professional and will not be cheap. Most of you will not have the the luxury to have a golf trainer one time, let alone 3 to 5 times a week, every week. This would cost in the thousands of dollars every month.

The average, ‘qualified’ golf fitness expert will charge anywhere from a low of $40 per session to a high of over $250. The more experienced the golf trainer, the more they will charge.

So what are you options if the above scenario is a little too out of your economic reality?

The next best thing is to get some golf fitness videos (dvds) that take you through the entire golf fitness session from start to finish?including stretches, warm ups, cool downs and advice.

This is the next best thing to having a golf trainer in person. I have been fortunate enough to receive hundreds of emails and letters from golfers who have greatly benefited from this format of training.

There are not too many fitness and/or golf fitness videos (dvds) on the market that take you through an actual workout. Most of them show you the exercise and discuss the do’s and don’ts.

What you really need is a golf fitness video (dvd) that takes you step-by-step through the workout so you have an idea of proper technique, pace of the session and a huge sense of satisfaction when it is done.

Then to have the wherewithal to put that video (dvd) back in the player in 48 hours and do it again. And again. And again. This will give you the best, most quickest results.

You really want to make sure it is a ‘complete workout’. Not just exercises and then you have to figure out how to put them together in a workout format. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve purchased workout videos only to have to figure them out on my own.

What a big waste of time and frustration!

You want "plug-and-play!"

So there is hope to finally have a golf trainer in your home on a weekly basis. One that will motivate you and inspire you to continue and strive to be the best you can be.

Go out and get your very own golf trainer!

by: Jason OConnor

Whether you want to believe it or not, we like to watch sports for very different reasons than you may think. In fact, the real things that cause us to like sports are in every person, whether we like sports or not. What things can we learn about human nature by simply looking at our fascination with competition? The answers may surprise you. Not only are the answers interesting in themselves, but they may just help you in other ways too.

There are some fairly straightforward and obvious explanations for why we like sports to be sure. Sports teach us about loyalty, perseverance and honor. It gives us a way to bond, it’s cathartic, and we identify with teams and players. We live vicariously through the players we watch. We have our favorite players, and there are teams we’ve grown up rooting for because our brother or dad used to love them, and now we still root for them today. Or we may follow a sport now that we used to play as a child.

But there are some deeper, more powerful and fascinating reasons too.

We’re All Just Big Children:

Whether you want to believe it or not, all adults are just big children. We’re all just big kids. We just hide our true feelings and thoughts with highly developed skills (or at least most of us do). We still want to belong or be accepted by our peers, we all still want to be loved, we still feel emotional pain, and we still find ourselves giving in to immediate gratification when we know better. And yes, some of us still lie and cheat in our normal day to day lives.

We certainly hide things better and often successfully ‘act’ as if we don’t care about belonging, or love, or pain, or whatever. Deep down inside we are a little more mature and wise, but basically still just children. We may not say it out loud anymore, but we still think to ourselves sometimes, “That’s not fair!” We would rather play than work. Some may argue, depending on whether they pee standing up or sitting down, that this is especially true for men. Maybe that’s why there are more men sports fans than women.

You see, watching sports gives us a perfect, safe and secure, black and white, little microcosm of life. Following a player, team or game allows us to experience ups and downs and a whole array of emotions, just like in real life, but we aren’t actually affected.

And unlike life, sports and games are generally fair! There are rules and a crystal clear framework, or paradigm that all the participants and spectators know about. There are never any monkey wrenches thrown into a sports game, like the rules changing mid-game for instance. If rules are broken, the offender is penalized. They don’t frustratingly get away sometimes like in real life.

At the end, there is an unambiguous winner and loser. We get to pretend that the game we’re watching is life, where everything is perfectly fair, everyone plays by the rules and everything makes sense.

Children tend to think of things in much more black and white terms. It is only through living and maturing that we realize that all of life is a series of grays. But we all still long for a simpler and easier life. When things are only seen in black or white, things indeed seem simpler and easier, but life isn’t so clear-cut.

This helps explain why politicians who break their platform down into simple sound bites and into terms devoid of complexity often do better than politicians who talk about life like it really is, a complex, interrelated world of nuances.

Watching sports allows us a temporarily safe and socially acceptable way to be more like our true nature, and our true nature is frighteningly childlike. So the next time you deal with a difficult person, remember that they are just a large child, like you and everyone else, and maybe that knowledge will help you deal with them a little more easily.

What Do Watching A Horror Movie And Sports Have In Common?

Ever wonder why so many people, including maybe you, enjoy watching horror movies so much? They provide a safe way for people to experience high levels of suspension without actually being in any real danger. Sports can be the same way. Again, watching sports allows us to enter a perfect world where the suspenseful outcome has no bearing on our real lives (unless you have a nasty sports gambling problem of course).

People love drama, suspension, and resolution, which are all elements inherent in sports. In fact, the closer the game, the more suspension there is. If we identify with a player and he wins, we are vicariously happy for the success. However, if the player’s team loses, we feel the defeat a little as well. But our lives are unaffected. And sports announcers usually only add to the drama and suspension.

A sports game is a sort of story. There is a beginning and an end. There is a protagonist (your team) and an antagonist (the other team). There is a scene and setting, the stadium at noon, and there is a plot, which is the action. Only after the games ends, and depending on if your team won or not, is it decided to be called a fairy tale ending or a tragedy.

Reptilian Brain and War

Whether you want to believe it or not, humans are a lot closer to nature and the animal world than most people like to think. We’re not just close to nature; we’re a part of it! Evolutionarily speaking, we are much closer in time to our unintelligent animal ancestors than we are to a transcended sentient species apart from nature. Our behavior is guided much more by our ‘primitive brain’ than our more recently developed neocortex, which is the seat of our intelligence. The primitive brain, or lower brain function, deals with fight or flight behavior, hunger, fear, and sex, among other things.

A common, yet erroneous concept is that the human brain is the result of billions of years of evolution. Our primitive or reptilian part of the brain is that old, but our brain’s extra large neocortex, the thing that separates us from other mammals, came about only a couple million years ago, a mere drop in the evolutionary bucket. The neocortex has not had much time to develop, and so our primitive brain plays a significant role in our lives.

Our basic flight or fight mentality is manifested in sports. We can relate, on some deeper and unconscious level, with the guy running with the football towards the end zone and being chased by a pack of angry men. We can understand what it feels like to check another player in hockey and slam him into the boards. Or we can sympathize with the NASCAR driver who gets passed by a competitor, but throws it into a higher gear and chases after him.

Our primitive desire for dominance is represented in sports. When our team wins, we experience a sort of dominance over the opposing team and their fans.

Our predatory nature is lit up when we see a linebacker following a running back through a mass of football players, waiting for the perfect moment to strike his prey with a tackle. Watching someone chase the man with the ball in basketball, soccer, or baseball affects us in similar ways.

Our tribal instincts are fulfilled by sports. We all want to belong to something; it’s a basic human need since we are such social animals. We identify with a team like our ancestors would identify with their tribe. This is especially true for the Western world’s modern man, where community has taken a back seat to independence.

Our primitive warring nature is satisfied by sports. There seems to be an innate desire for war, even in so-called ‘modern’ man. Indeed, look at the world today and how many current wars are going on, and you’ll see how far we are to real peace. Pathetically, that last statement holds true for almost any time in history, regardless of when you’re reading this. Again, this goes back to the fact that we are ruled more by our ‘primitive’, survival-driven, fight or flight brain than our reasonable and intelligent ‘modern’ brain.

Every sports game is like a tiny war between tribes, with an end and a declared victor. But there’s one important distinction; unlike war, no one has to die in sports.

One of the reasons going to a game is more exciting than watching it on TV is that there is a kind of energy created when so many people get together and root for one cause. You might even liken it to a mob mentality. We don’t have to look farther than our own stadiums where pandemonium has broken out in protest to a call or in celebration of a win. Sports strongly appeals to the gaming and struggle instincts of humans.

And since our modern lives no longer contain any real physical danger and all our basic needs are immediately taken care of, we now have a void that needs to be filled somehow, our primitive brain expects it. Sports fit the bill. It gives us the illusion of reality where there are no consequences. It gives us the illusion of battle, war, victory and defeat, without the consequences. And it gives us the illusion of being a child again, even if it’s all temporary.

You may not like sports at all, but we are all a quite childlike inside. We all yearn for some level of drama in our lives. And we are all constantly affected by our primitive brain. Watching sports is one excellent way for people to reconcile these inescapable facts.

Metal detecting, be it relic or treasure hunting, is appealing whether as a work or a hobby. There are several ideal places where we can go detecting to enjoy using our metal detector. It might be on a beach, near a gold prospecting site, or in an area that has many old relics and artifacts in it. But first, we need to pay attention to the rules and regulations of where we would like to go metal detecting.

Primarily, we have to start hunting in our own backyard, our neighbors’ backyard, our friends’ backyard, the sidewalks and the porches, the flower beds, and behind the trees. This would be the start of our metal detecting career. What we can find in these places depends on how old the house and/or land is. It would be a lot of fun finding lots of memorabilia such as old coins, relics, bottles, jewelries, lost things or maybe an entire collection.

Another fine place to do metal detecting is in parks and playgrounds. Our community parks, city parks, old parks, zoos, picnic areas, city playgrounds, old playgrounds, sandboxes, swings, campgrounds and old battlefields is where we could go to look behind large trees, grassy areas, old trees, shady spots, unpaved parking lots, spaces where lovers hide to get away from the crowd, under park benches and pathways. It’s possible to find new coins, old coins, lost rings or earrings, wedding bands, bracelets, watches, kids’ trinkets, toys - all lost or left behind.

Beaches and riverbanks are exciting sites for hunting and metal detecting, too. Look in places such as old ferry launches, old fishing spots, old swimming holes, and old bridges on the riverbanks. You might find iron debris, broken potteries and glassware which could be the best location to find older items and perhaps even novelty coins, jewelries, watches, relics and other possible collectibles. Go where people gather together during the busy season, local beaches, town beaches, old marinas, and ocean beaches are most likely the prime spot for buttons, bullets, sinkers, Indian artifacts, old charms, and ornaments.

In your local woods, you might look for foundations, cellar holes, old cemeteries or graveyards, abandoned mausoleums and fields such as old farm fields, tobacco fields, cotton fields, cattle, sheep, or any farm field. These are good spots for metal detector utilization. Don’t forget to look on new paths, old overgrown paths, search near the road, check on hiking trails, old wagon roads, foundations, old cellar holes, and upturned tombstones or go to the main entrance of the farm after a heavy rain on the fields. If you hit on a coin, thoroughly search that specific area to find coins, bottles, or relics, depending on location.

Metal detecting is an exciting, adventurous, and fun way of finding valuables or items of sentimental value to us. Using the metal detector in places such as parks, beaches, woods, playgrounds, fields, riverbanks, old cellars and graveyards, even on our own backyards is a good way of bonding with families, friends, and colleagues. It is a fascinating hobby, too. Different places bring different collections, treasures, and memories as long as we follow the proper code of ethics.

Many of us might assume that there isn’t too much debate about the characteristics of a good match player. Clearly, the ability to play your game in the best or worst of conditions better or worse can be useful, conversely we know that bad match players are people easily put off their game or cannot perform when they need to most. Therefore, if you want to win the better part of your matches you simply need to play consistent. However, this idea strikes me as too easy - too simple. If that is all there was to match play than your local course would be overflowing with excellent match players. I must confess, there is a great deal more in match play than there appears to be.

I would propose that preparation for match play begins the moment you step into the clubhouse. Many golfers have been known to play their "best" game before they even step onto the green. Often, good match players will try to get inside your head by making coy suggestions about certain aspects of their game (or yours for that matter). They may comment on certain aspects of the green, or lavish praise upon you for a hole well played. In short, remember that golf is a far more mental, than physical game, and be prepared for chance remarks that might have greater implications than you might otherwise expect.

I believe that many of the "chance remarks" made on the first tee, or during the course of a match, have an important affect upon the result. If you are a person who is prone to the comments or suggestions of an opponent, you must try to let these chance remarks pass through your mind like "water through a sieve." Some people might laugh at the suggestion that a person of strong willpower cannot impose their desires upon a person of weaker. I even have a perfect example of this concept in action.

In an important match, one of the players was sinking his putts from all parts of the green. After some time, his opponent, in calm and casual manner said, "You know, I just can’t make out how it is you manage to sink so many putts with such a strong grip." I can only assume that this comment led the golfer to question whether or not his grip was strong, because his short game suddenly broke down. On the next putt he had to play he was thinking more of his grip than of the putt - that simple remark put him completely off his game.

Broadly speaking, the play of an opponent affects most golfers in two ways: the method of play, and the result of that method. Furthermore, we must consider the temperament of an opponent, and his or her attitude towards life in general. Since all types of people play golf, the novice must expect to encounter: the talkative player, and his opposite, the self-centered or introverted golfer. You must be mentally prepared to face whatever comments, criticism, or flattery that an opponent might give, and allow them to flow through you, unnoticed.

Undoubtedly, it will be of benefit to all of you to vary your opponents as much as possible and to play frequently with strangers. It calls for greater effort to play your best game under such conditions, and vice versa, it can be detrimental to play with one or two of your friends and to avoid other opponents. Many golfers get into the habit of pairing always with a friend; someone whom they can play against with very little mental effort. Remember, you are better off playing against someone that you can never beat, than someone you can always beat. Your mind is your greatest weapon - guard it well!

Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable game. We golf over and over again, because we love the game. So why do we beat ourselves up, just before we get off the first tee box? Have you ever heard yourself with a bunch of negative emotions before the golf round?

“Another day out on the golf course and my back is killing me.” Why would you even consider golfing, if it were painful? Why did those even consider golfing with a bad back? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“I have to get through this eighteen with the least amount of pain.” Why not play nine holes instead of eighteen? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“I am not too sure if the mental part of my game can take any more. It’s tough mentally when things just aren’t going right.” If your confused mentally, why even bother picking up a golf club? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“I hope this is not going to be another brutal round, like the other day?” When things are not going right, why not take a day off from golf and meditate instead? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“If I do not hit the fairway on the first tee box, I think I’ll quit playing golf after eighteen.” Why quit after eighteen when the first shot may be the reason to quit? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“If I do not make par on the first hole, I am not going to keep score for the rest of the round.” If your temper is that bad, why carry a scorecard at all? I’ll tell you why. All for the love of golf!

“The first water hazard my ball ends up in, my golf clubs are going in with it.” Do yourself a favor and play with rentals. Why? All for the love of golf!

“I better not three putt any greens today. I’ll break my putter on the first three putt green, if I do.” Do yourself a favor and pick up for two. Why? All for the love of golf!

“Frosty will never see winter, if I get a snowman today.” Do not play golf with anybody by the nickname Frosty. Why? All for the love of golf!

To help avoid some of these negative emotions, booking a tee time in advance will help keep your mind on a positive level. Why? All for the love of golf!

A backpacking checklist is usually about the “stuff.” Good equipment is nice to have, but even with the best gear you can get into trouble in the wilderness. You might have matches and the latest fire starters, but still not be able to get that fire going. It takes more than good gear to assure a safe and enjoyable trip. Towards that end, then, this is a list of skills you should have or learn.

1. Navigation. Contrary to what many novices think, a compass doesn’t tell you where you are. For that matter, a map doesn’t either, if you don’t know how to use it. Practice close to home if you can’t yet use both of these easily. Do the same with your GPS unit.

2. Staying warm. There are tricks to staying warm. Shed layers as you get warm, for example, so you don’t have sweat to chill you later. Use wind-blocking shell clothing, and wear a hat. Eating fatty foods before sleeping can keep you warmer.

3. Pitching a tent. Pitch your tent or tarp wrong and the rain will come in, or the wind will tear the seams. They need to be pitched tight, and you should be able to do it in a few minutes. Practice in the yard.

4. Cooking over a fire. Making soup over a small fire is not as easy as it seems. Cover the pan, block the wind, and keep the fire small and concentrated. Time yourself when you practice. You don’t have to rush normally, but speed can be important in some situations, and it’s always possible your stove will break.

5. Identifying edible plants. Learning to identify three or four wild edible berries can make a trip more enjoyable. Learning to identify cattails and one or two other good survival food plants can be very helpful, especially if you ever lose your food to a bear.

6. Walking. If you pace yourself and learn how to move comfortably over rocky terrain, you’ll be less tired, and less likely to twist an ankle. Tighten those laces, too.

7. Understanding animals. Is the bear “bluff charging” or stalking you? The latter means you’ll be the bear’s supper if you play dead. A clue: making a lot of noise usually means he just wants to frighten you (a “bluff charge”), but you need to read up on this one.

8. Sky reading. Are those just clouds, or a lightning storm coming? It would be good to know when you’re on a high ridge. In the rockies, afternoon thunderstorms are the norm in summer. Learn about the weather patterns of an area, and the basics of predicting weather, and you’ll be a lot safer.

9. Basic first aid. What are the symptoms of hypothermia? Stumbling and slurred speech are a couple of them. How do you properly treat blisters? You can use duct tape if you don’t have moleskin. These and other basics are good things to know.

10. Firemaking. Start practicing in your yard. Try to start that fire with one match. Also try it the next time it’s raining. Get in the habit of collecting dry tinder before the rain comes. Learn what things burn even when wet, like birch bark and pine sap.

This last one can be one of the more important skills in an emergency. Experts can start a fire in almost any circumstances, but you don’t need to be an expert in wilderness survival to enjoy a safe hiking trip. For a safer, more enjoyable trip, just do the best you can, and start checking off the skills on this backpacking checklist.

The very youngest of us throw toys and toddlers soon kick balls. Kicking a football is a natural thing and provides justification for the joy found in physical exercise.

From the basic urge by youngsters to kick a ball the game of Football has developed into a worldwide industry now dependent on the highest level of skills needed to promote dynamic competitions to attract every class of spectators.

This series of articles is intended to make basic technique available to those whose circumstances prevent them from going to a recognized football academy. It is hoped by highlighting the technique of football for these newcomers to the game they too will become proficient at an earlier age to avoid later mistakes.

The football is usually struck by the top part of the foot to propel it to a specific point in space. Note the word ‘point.’ The ball should not be kicked vaguely in the general direction of the target but kicked to a specific point in space where the next player will be best placed to proceed further.

Ball kickers are either right or left footed. This refers to the foot they prefer to use when kicking a football. Some players kick equally well with either foot.

A football can be either still or moving when kicked. A still ball is a ‘dead ball.’ A moving ball can be moving in any direction or at any speed when kicked. A moving ball may be coming towards the kicker or moving away while it is actually being kicked.

A right-footed player may be on either the left or right side of the playing field [pitch] still or moving and be passing to a player who is either moving or stationary and who will also be either a left or right-footed player. A left-footed player will be faced by a similar set of opposite or handed variables.

A ball kicked with the right foot by a right footed player is likely to be more accurate and have greater power than if on the left hand side of the pitch. A right footed player on the left side of the pitch will be forced to move round behind the ball more to the left to bring his right foot into full use to make the pass. This takes time.

A player who is targeted for a pass may be still or either moving away or coming forward in relation to the kicker.

A dead-ball is always on the pitch when struck. A moving ball may be a low pass in contact with the pitch along the whole length of its moving path. A moving ball may be bouncing low or skimming the pitch or at any body height between pitch and head or above head to a considerable height.

The speed of a moving ball may be passive - losing momentum or be traveling at great velocity rising or falling.

The kicker creates each of these variables and the ball has to be dealt with successfully by the receiving player before becoming the next kicker.

A player will approach a dead ball to take a free kick awarded by the referee. The kicker’s angle of approach to the ball will depend on where the spot is in relation to the centerline of the pitch how far it is away from the goalmouth and the disposition of all the other players on the pitch.

The kicker will have to take into account the power and direction of wind and the angle of sunlight. There may be poor visibility from mist fog rain snow season of the year or time of day. The pitch may be bone hard when dry damp following rain or muddy after heavy use. The turf may be frozen slippery covered with ice or swept snow.

The ball must be kicked to arrive low or head high or high but dipping late or on a bending curve. A free kicker born to the game may not even appear to take these factors into account yet somehow will always place the ball exactly in the right spot for the next player to make his best move. An experienced player will calculate the effect of these variables also automatically but not with the same degree of style confidence or artistry displayed by the top hundred or so players in the game. The run-of-mill player may take more trouble but be more likely to hesitate allowing the importance of the kick to play into his fears causing the free kick to be wasted. Plus a kicker may be fit off form or recovering from injury and perhaps not fully match fit.

It is usual to place the support non-kicking foot immediately to the side of the ball next to the nearer face of the ball while the kicking foot swings down and through on the other front quarter face of the ball. The kicking foot toe should point to the target destination point achieve both direction and speed.

The ball can be hit by the underside toe of the boot - that is chipped - lofted by kicking with the top of the boot curved round the underside of the ball or hit at a point above the ball’s center of gravity line to put top spin on it and so keep it low.

The most accurate way to kick a ball is along the ground because the ball then moves in only a plane and has only two variables. A targeted kicked ball must be accurate in both direction speed and height. By kicking along the ground the height variable is eliminated and only the direction and speed have to be accurate.

This ground pass has the advantage of being the shortest distance between kicker and receiver. This means the pass arrives quicker at its destination. If the pass is short the time allowed for the opposition to intercept it is almost eliminated who have to adopt close marking to break up possession. If there are sufficient players in unmarked positions available to receive short passes ball possession will be difficult to break up by the opposition. In addition the defense will be forced into constant running especially in the attack area in front of goal. Players who can rest momentarily between each kick receive fewer injuries and always have time and energy in reserve to see where every player is on the field. Such possession inspires confidence in the team and may even result in spectator ridicule directed at the defense.

In dead ball situations these matters are not important but they become relevant after the kick is made. Goal scoring free kick right or left foot specialists from wherever outside the penalty area use the foot they prefer.
